Rankin House

Winston Churchill famously said, "Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it". Our 3rd and 4th grade students have spent the past few weeks learning about the Underground Railroad. Today our students got a chance to see a major landmark of the Underground Railroad in our own back yard, the Rankin House. Our students started the guided tour in the new visitor's center, walked to overlook the river, and the guide leader tried to set the scene helping our students understand the perspectives of the Rankin family and slaves who were seeking freedom. The knowledge, understanding, and empathy our students displayed would make us all proud. Our students then toured the Rankin House itself. We are so blessed to have this important historical landmark in our own backyard. Several students said, "best field trip ever" and "thank you for taking us to the Rankin House". Freedom isn't free, and there were many important lessons taught in this lesson and today. Thanks to Mrs. G and Mrs. K for chaperoning today, and special thanks to Mrs. Ashton for organizing this outstanding learning experience.
