First grade completed their “Excavate a Gem” activity by chipping away at a Plaster of Paris cube to discover the gem inside. The Dollar Tree kits proved to be a bit hard to break apart but the children persisted in to finding their gem. All of the cubes produced a gem except for one to the dismay of one of the students. As a compensation, I brought a real geode (found on a farm in Boone County, Kentucky) to school and cracked it apart to reveal the crystals inside. The children learned about geode formation and reviewed the key points from their “Where People Live” unit. Please check the photo gallery!
